Dr. Antares Ramos-Álvarez (Oxon) is a marine geographer and ecologist with over 25 years of experience. Her work has focused on coral reef conservation, nature-based solutions, marine and coastal management strategies, community integration, climate change adaptation, resilience, disaster preparedness and recovery, and community-led coral reef restoration. Antares is successful in making connections between unlikely partners, resulting in innovative collaboration. She has led multi-sectoral teams on land, watershed and coral reef management and conservation efforts, from both federal and nonprofit roles.
In 2021, she co-founded Sail for Reefs, an NGO that aims to provide a bridge between water-based sports and the conservation of marine resources, mainly coral reefs, through education, interaction with the ocean and habitat restoration work. Sail for Reefs is currently focused in the restoration of the San Juan Barrier Reef, an urban reef in the most populated area in Puerto Rico, which includes the establishment and operation of a land-based coral nursery.
